play to your strengths

You will excel only by maximising your strengths, never by fixing your weaknesses.

You don’t have to stick your head in the sand about what may need improving, but the point is not to FOCUS on it. Weakness fixing is damage control not development. Damage control can prevent failure, but it will never elevate you to excellence.

Strengths work is often a foreign concept for a lot of my clients, and it’s not really a surprise as we live in a society that is hell bent on “being well-rounded” instead of maximising on and harnessing our natural abilities. Our employers send us to courses and workshops to fill in our perceived gaps, but rarely do they  capitalise on our already strong skills and talents. It seems a bit backwards doesn’t it?

You wouldn’t ask an echidna to race a cheetah, or to climb a tree would you? Because that’s not what it’s great at. What then does an echidna do best in the world? Easy, it’s rolling into a small spiky ball for protection!

It’s a dumbed-down analogy I know, but I love it because this is exactly what we ask of ourselves every single day! Because your talents are so innate, they are often hidden from your view. You can get so disconnected from your own brilliant unique qualities, that you constantly try to jam a round peg into a square hole.

The irony is that since they influence every decision you make, you are already intimately familiar with your talents. Yet they are so influential, so interwoven in the fabric of your life, that the pattern of each one is hard to discern.

You spend your whole life inside the frame of your strengths, so perhaps it’s no wonder that after a while you become blind to them. They are so ingrained in who you are, how you show up in the world, and how you operate, that they may just seem “normal”, ordinary, or common place but they truly are your extraordinary gifts.

You may think “well doesn’t everybody do that?”, no, no they don’t.

So what is a strength exactly?

TALENT  +  SKILL  =  STRENGTH

It’s all about finding your SWEET SPOT. You want to harness your own brilliant uniqueness and make it work for you, instead of trying to fit into some pre-conceived mould. Harnessing your natural unique gifts and talents, so that you can make the most of them and share them with the world around you.

To excel in your chosen field and to find lasting satisfaction in doing so, you will need to understand your unique patterns. You will need to become an expert at finding and describing and applying and practicing and refining your strengths.
